I write full time, but what I do is focus on a particular area. I am always reading, researching, attending events (not just to write about) and learning. This gives me a platform of knowledge to be able to base my work on. Most writers who are in the ‘real life’ kind of writing (is humanities or society a better term?) fail to do this so they flounder from publication to publication. Once you have a solid history behind you, sure you will need to pitch ideas, but this should be a in a brief and succinct way, not an all day exercise.

The bigger issue is that I see now is the widely divergent pay rates that vary between publications as there really are no standards and there is always someone that will work for less (or for free) and publications that value quantity over quality.
