Amen! I get so tired of the term startup when it is used to describe small businesses. There is nothing wrong with being a small business, especially if you are selling a product and making a profit and your staff actually get paid a salary rather than living together in a garage or worse, with their parents.

I was doing some research recently on the tech scene in Edinburgh, including financial services available to startups. Small business loans were eligible for particular loans whereas ‘startups’ were considered too high risk. Interesting when you consider how many retail and food businesses fail. So yeah, terminology is a funny thing.

And don’t get me started on how a company can become big and successful and still be called a startup.
